Mabry Named Executive Director of Rugby Texas
(From RugbyTexas.com) Paul Mabry, an experienced rugby administrator with an impressive professional background, has been chosen as the first paid executive of Rugby Texas.
"This is an important milestone for our organization," said Rugby Texas President Rick Marshall in announcing the selection. "Our goal is to realize and accomodate explosive growith in the High School and youth ranks over the next few years. Paul is passionate about the game, and as the father of a (graduating) high school player, he is dedicated to the future of our organization."
Mabry's 35-year involvement with rugby began in Galveston before he moved to Houston in the early 80s. He has been a player, coach, referee and administrator, highlighted by his 10 years of service as a member of the USA Rugby Board of Directors. In 2001, he was the chief local organizer for the USA-South Africa Test Match held in Houston. He has played in Ireland, France, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Canada and Argentina.
Professionally, Mabry is a Houston public affairs consultant whose clients have ranged from Harrah's Casions to the Houston Public Officer's union. He served as the City of Houston's Director of Communications and mayoral press secretary, preceded by his tenure as an executive with with the Houston Chamber of Commerce, and also at the Port of Galveston. He began his career as a journalist, working for both print and television organizations. He was a member of the Houston 2012 Olympic Bid Committee, and was a key organizer of the 1986 U.S. Olympic Festival. He is also an assistant Scout Master.
"This is a great opportunity to combine my skills and passion, and to serve the game we all love," Mabry said. "I have witnessed first-hand the tremendous satisfaction that comes with being associated with a high school program, and I want to help spread the gospel of rugby throughout the state. My job will be to provide back-up and resources to the many dedicated volunteers we already have, and to handle administrative duties so that together, we can take our sport to new levels in every part of Texas."
Funding for the new position comes in part from a grant provided by USA Rugby as part of its commitment to growing youth and high school rugby throughout the country.
