HSAAs impress at Wellington College Festival

“We get better each game and Friday’s performance was our best.”

CROWTHORNE, England – The USA Rugby Boys’ High School All-Americans U17s finished the RFU Wellington College International Rugby Festival with a 1-2 record Friday, following their 32-35 defeat to England South U16s.

The HSAAs previously beat Belgium U17s 21-10 on Monday, April 1, and lost to Wales U16s 45-16 on Friday, March 29.

“This tournament is so rewarding for our young players,” HSAAs Head Coach Salty Thompson said after Friday’s match. “We get better each game and Friday’s performance was our best.”

Scotland and France each fell to England South earlier in the week, a testament to the competitiveness of the Wellington College Festival. The HSAAs, sponsored by Aircraft Charter Solutions, appeared in the Festival for the second consecutive year.

“We competed very well in a physical and entertaining battle,” Thompson said. “Captain Hanco Germishuys had a tremendous game at flanker, along with tight head Bruce Yun and Malcolm May at lock. All three were here last year and their performances and leadership were exceptional.”

Thompson also pointed to Ben Cima at full-back as a reason for the HSAAs’ success. Cima’s goal-kicking was described by his coach as “clinical.”

The HSAAs will be out of action for a while and will convene at camp in Greeley, Colo., in July.
