Boys High School All-Americans earn first win of Argentina Tour
"With nine changes today it was a new team and a new challenge."
The USA Rugby Boys High School All-Americans lined up against Cordoba Academy today at the Palermo Bajo Rugby Club for game two against Argentina's premier age grade academy and came away with a 21-13 win.
Jimmy Ronan's missed penalty at three minutes was bettered by Cordoba at eight minutes. Ronan made his second attempt to tie the game 3-3 at 12 minutes. Accurate goal kicking by the Cordoba fly-half made it 3-6 at 15 minutes before Gabe Ruflin scored the HSAAs’ first try after 20 minutes. Malcolm May took a line-out possession at the front and initiated a maul sevens yards out. The maul rolled and Gabe Ruflin took the ball from Mike Kellett to score in the right corner.
The 13-6 HSAA lead was extended at 27 minutes with a Christian Adams try, converted by Ronan. Possession started with a five-man line-out and maul around the right 22-meter line. Chris Fotu broke off the maul, committed two defenders and created fast ball for the backs to attack. Adams fended off a tackle then beat another defender to score, giving the HSAAs a 15-6 lead at halftime.
At 46 minutes Ronan extended the lead to 18-6, but Cordoba bounced back and scored off of a kick-off reception dropped ball by the HSAAs. They converted the sideline score to make it 18-13 a minute later.
Jimmy Ronan kicked a crucial penalty at 32 minutes to give the HSAAs breathing space and a 21-13 win.
"With nine changes today it was a new team and a new challenge," said Head Coach Salty Thompson. “Paule Barford has done a lot of good work to gel our forwards and produce excellent possession. In addition, we're putting an emphasis on defense and the boys are playing with structure and discipline."
Malcolm May set the tone in a competitive HSAA pack while half back pairing of Ronan and Wolfer managed the game well. Adams made an impact at inside center.
