HSAAs finish Argentina Tour with competitive loss

“We came here with the goal to narrow the gap between ourselves and Argentina and we've made progress."

The USA Rugby Boys High School All-Americans were more competitive in a 33-18 loss to Argentina U18s in the second test game played at the Uru Cure Club in Rio Cuarto Saturday.

Twelve minutes into the game, the HSAAs turned over a five-meter scrum gifting Argentina a 5-0 lead. At 20 minutes HSAA scrum-half Michael Reid scored off of a quick tap penalty creating a 5-5 game. The HSAAs gave Argentina another five-meter scrum turnover at 27 minutes and went into halftime down 5-12.

The first half showed significant improvements from the HSAAs controlling line-outs, winning contact and building phase play attack.

The second half scoring opened with a Ben Cima penalty at 47 minutes, closing the score to 8-12. A yellow card on Anthony Fotu for repeated team infractions hurt the HSAAs as Argentina extended their lead 19-8. Argentina continued to feed off HSAA errors totaling 33 points while Reid added another quick tap try off of a line break by Malcolm May and Niall Barry.

"Having a second opportunity to play Argentina was an invaluable opportunity to rectify the errors in game one and bring a different attitude and competitiveness today,” said Head Coach Salty Thompson. “We came here with the goal to narrow the gap between ourselves and Argentina and we've made progress. The more our boys experience this level of rugby the more competitive we become."
