Women's Eagles Sevens off to Dubai
CHULA VISTA, Calif. – Women’s Eagles Sevens Head Coach Ric Suggitt has selected 12 players for Emirates Dubai Rugby Sevens, the first leg of the 2013-14 IRB Women’s Sevens World Series, which kicks off Thursday, Nov. 28.
Five players – Victoria Folayan, Kelly Griffin, Kathryn Johnson, Deven Owsiany and Jillion Potter – return from the Eagles’ bronze medal campaign at the 2013 Rugby World Cup Sevens in Moscow, Russia. The Eagles finished 5-1 at Luzhniki Stadium, with the only loss coming in the Cup Semifinal to eventual champion New Zealand.
The Eagles also bring youth to Dubai, with three USA Rugby AIG Collegiate All-Americans – Megan Bonny, Dana Meschisi and Rebekah Siebach – in the squad.
Lauren Doyle has been selected, as well. Doyle gave the Eagles a boost last season, scoring eight tries in four legs and finishing the circuit 17th in tries scored.
Ireland, Fiji and New Zealand await the Eagles in Pool A, with the Rugby World Cup Sevens champion the final hurdle on day one.
The Eagles won the Bowl at last year’s tournament with a 26-12 defeat of France before finishing in second at Houston 7s, finishing fourth in Guangzhou, and winning the Plate at Amsterdam Sevens.
Back for a second season, the Women’s Sevens World Series has lengthened with two legs added to the tour. Brazil will host the third leg of the tour after the Eagles’ home leg – Atlanta 7s at Fifth Third Bank Stadium at Kennesaw State University.
