HSAAs finish Rosslyn Park Sevens 2-1-1

"The pool was the most competitive one we’ve faced at Rosslyn Park."

LONDON, England – The USA Rugby Boys High School All-Americans finished pool play at the Rosslyn Park National School Sevens 2-1-1 with wins against Yorkshire’s Bishop Burton College and ICEF Public Schools.

Salty Thompson’s team was knocked out of the 2012 tournament in the Round of 16 and the Plate Semifinal in 2013.

“The pool was the most competitive one we’ve faced at Rosslyn Park,” Thompson said. “This was a challenge for the squad that had six changes from the Las Vegas-winning First Team squad.

“Credit to the boys for their commitment. This was the sort of developmental experience that challenges their game to a new level.”

The HSAAs opened the tournament against Stuart Krohn’s ICEF Public Schools team. The youngsters put a lot of pressure on the All-Americans in the first half, but were unable to avoid a 38-5 loss.

Gwent College handed the HSAAs their first loss of the tournament in the second match. The Welshmen frustrated Thompson’s team with lengthy spells of possession in the second half and found a late try for the seven-point, 26-19 win.

The HSAAs showed defensive improvement in the third match against Sherborne School, but could not find a second try to draw 7-7.

“[The draw] didn’t help our chances of advancing but I was proud of the way the boys responded from the game two loss,” Thompson said.

A 15-7 win against Bishops Burton College in the HSAAs’ final match was not enough to make the Cup round at Rosslyn Park, as the 10 points from four games put them in third behind 14-point Sherborne and 12-point Gwent College.
