Spring Championship matchups settled for 2016 tournaments

LAFAYETTE, Colo. - The matchups for the April 9-10 weekend's rounds of the 2016 USA Rugby Women's Division I and Division II Spring Championships have been finalized.

University of California, Davis, hosts seven teams - as well as its own program - in the regional rounds of the DI Round of Eight and DII Round of 16. The home-field Aggies will line up against Washington State University Saturday, while two other California teams - University of California, San Diego, and Chico State University - will battle for a place in Sunday's Semifinal with a shot at the May 7 DI Spring Championship title game on the line.

On the eastern seaboard, Life University hosts three teams from the Mason-Dixon Conference, two of which - University of North Carolina and James Madison - were in the 2014 DI Round of 16. The Tar Heels and Dukes will have to get past University of Central Florida and University of Virginia, respectively, to reach Sunday's Semifinals.

Humboldt State University and California State University, Long Beach, will represent the Golden State at UC Davis in the Pacific Region's DII Round of 16 weekend. The two will play each other Saturday opposite University of Nevada, Reno, and Western Oregon University.

At University of California, Riverside, the Highlanders will face Fresno State University, while the all-California Western Region is rounded out by University of Southern California's match with University of California, Irvine.

University of Mary Washington hosts the Eastern Region's Round of 16, with Carolinas Conference Champion University of South Carolina set to play the Eagles Saturday. Carolinas runner-up University of North Carolina-Charlotte, and Capital's Salisbury cement the Saturday matchups.

University of Georgia and University of Arkansas will continue a long-held collegiate rivalry Saturday in the Southern Regional at the home of Atlanta Old White. The winner of that matchup will meet the victor of Eckerd College-Tulane University Sunday, with the undefeated team at the end of the weekend scheduled to fly to California for the Spring Championships in Davis April 22-24.

A Women's Division III West Regional Championship is also being held in Riverside over the weekend, with Claremont College, Occidental College, Saint Mary's College, and University of San Francisco each scheduled for two matches. The Regional Championship is designed to provide a post-season championship for the women's small colleges that play in the spring.

"The four teams in our Division III Regional Championship have worked hard to reach the championship, and we are pleased to offer them this opportunity," USA Rugby Collegiate Director Rich Cortez said.

Championship brackets can be found below, with the brackets to be updated following the respective playoff rounds at the end of the weekend.
