All travel is covered, with the possibility of a stipend or funding for coaching development. Previous experience required with priority given to candidates who have experience coaching women’s sides.

Team Background

Founded in 2000, The Lady Lions quickly became the premier Division II team in the NYC area, going 5-1 in their first season and becoming the first-ever Division II National Champions in spring of 2002. After nearly a decade of success in DII and numerous trips to Nationals, the Lions entered Division I in 2010, where they have continued success and look forward to growing in a higher tier of competition. The Lady Lions also participate competitively in the Summer 7’s season.

Typically we have well over 30 players on our roster, with a select few who represent our team at higher level events, such as USA Rugby camps and IRB International 7s Series. We recruit heavily from the many outstanding collegiate rugby programs throughout the East coast, such as UNC, Vassar, Fordham, George Washington. We also have many new and developmental/social players as well.

We have an excellent organization, with an elected officer system and have many returning alumni who continue to contribute time, money and effort into maintaining a strong program. The women’s team is one component of the greater Village Lions RFC, which also runs a competitive men’s team and a second social/Old Boys side.

Requirements include the following:

  1. Commitment for Fall 2013 through Spring 2014 at a minimum (August 2013 through June 2014).
  2. Able to plan and execute 2 practices a week, plus attend games on Saturdays, which sometimes requires travel. Able to effectively manage forwards & backs split time, or able to coordinate assistance. If unable to attend practices regularly, we will consider an option to seek an Assistant Coach in cooperation with the selected Head Coach.
  3. Able to provide clear instruction, development and a variety of coaching methods for many different experience levels.
  4. Knowledge of current USAR laws, playing styles and coaching methods. Recent playing, coaching or referee experience a plus. Able to adapt coaching skills to the needs and goals of the team and have a deep understanding of the game and clear vision for strategy.
  5. Must be a very strong leader. Able to provide positive coaching, fair assessment/feedback, and have open communication with club officers and players in a fun, safe and welcoming environment.
