While Rugby World Cup Sevens 2018 is undoubtedly a benchmark in the history of American rugby, the experience at AT&T Park is only a portion of the imprint this tournament will leave here in the United States. Rugby World Cup Sevens 2018, Rugby Norcal, Play Rugby USA, USA Rugby Academy powered by Atavus and Playworks Northern California will bring rugby to thousands of youth in the Bay Area and beyond through Impact Beyond. The program's drive is to leverage the international tournament as means for growing interest in the sport, specifically on the youth level.

Impact Beyond strives to accomplish 4 goals:
  • • Make Rugby World Cup Sevens 2018 about more than just the matches
  • • Leverage the tournament as means for growing an interest in youth rugby
  • • Create and support youth initiatives that can be scaled and replicated in other US markets
  • • Highlight the values of rugby to engage, inspire and empower youth

About

Kevin Barth
Kevin Barth, Program Manager

Kevin comes to USA Rugby with previous employment experience as a small business owner, corporate marketing manager, and high school teacher. His introduction to rugby came when he joined the club team at the University of California, Irvine.  From there he played for Back Bay (Newport Beach), Manurewa (NZ), and most significantly The Olympic Club (SF). His playing career included territorial representation, two trips to Fiji 7s as part of USA Atlantis 7s, and four international tournaments with the USA 7s team in the late 90s.

For the past six years Kevin has been a coach and administrator for the Danville Oaks Youth program in northern California.  His passion for the sport of rugby, and specifically the growth of youth rugby, has helped to grow the Danville program to well over 300 registered players with USA Rugby. "The values, experiences, and joy that were provided to me thanks to rugby has been a significant part of my life. My goal is to help provide today’s youth that same opportunity. This was my hope when I began working with a local youth rugby club, and is now my mission as part of the RWC7s Impact Beyond program."

Ceara Lafferty
Ceara Lafferty, Legacy Coordinator

I discovered rugby my freshman year at UC Berkeley and played there until graduating in May 2017. During my time there, I was able to represent Cal at a National All Star Camp and on the Pacific Mountain Rugby Conference All Star team. With the PMRC All Star team, I traveled throughout Ireland and played in scrimmages and tournaments hosted by the Impact Beyond program in conjunction with the 2017 Women’s Rugby World Cup. I am now playing for the Berkeley All Blues Division 2 team and I am looking forward to playing with their WPL side next fall. I have personally experienced the life-changing nature of rugby, especially in how empowering it can be for young women, and it has helped shape me into the strong woman I am today. In the same vein, I aspire to empower kids who may not receive validation of their worth elsewhere in their lives through my work with the Impact Beyond Legacy program. I also hope to get more kids involved in rugby programs in the Bay Area, thereby expanding the rugby community in the United States.

Nolan Verga
Nolan Verga, Legacy Coordinator

Hey everyone. My name is Nolan and I'm extremely excited to be apart of this years RWC7s and working for USA Rugby!

I have been playing rugby for the past eleven years of my life, and it has been such a profound life experience that I wouldn't trade it for anything. I first started playing rugby when I was a student attending San Jose State University. After graduating, I started playing for San Francisco Golden Gate (SFGG) which gave me the opportunity to play internationally a few seasons in both New Zealand, and France. Rugby has helped me to travel the world and expose me to other amazing cultures. While in France I started coaching and teaching Rugby. Now back in the States, I am currently playing for SFGG once more.

The camaraderie of Rugby is one of my favorite aspects of the sport. Working hard together and facing adversity is what has me playing year after year. I am excited about the opportunity to teach and promote the sport to the next generation of rugby players.
