USA Claim Shield in Welly

Eagles claim Shield in Wellington

WELLINGTON, New Zealand - The USA Men's Sevens team went 2-1 on day two of the NZI Sevens and are coming home to the USA for the fourth leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series with some hardware.  The Eagles defeated France in the Shield final after defeating Canada and losing to Scotland in the Bowl quarterfinal earlier in the day.

USA v. Scotland

In the opening match of the day the USA took on Scotland and at half time the Scots were up 14-0.  The Eagles weren't able to get on the board until it was too late, with Zach Test scoring in the 14th minute.  Scotland racked up 24 points total and booted the Eagles out of contention for the Bowl.  Next up was the Eagles' northern rival, Canada who were themselves put out of the Bowl competition by Kenya in their previous match.

Canada opened the scoring in the Shield semifinal but the USA answered back through Justin Boyd who scored a converted try and the scores were even at halftime.  Tai Enosa converted Boyd's try in the first half and got one of his own to open the second.  The USA started to take control and Zach Test and Roland Suniula each got a score apiece and the Eagles advanced in the Shield competition and would meet France in the Shield final.

The Eagles met France, a familiar foe so far this season in the Shield final.  After a disappointing day one, Al Caravelli and his team wanted to end the Wellington tournament on a good note and build momentum for the USA Sevens.  Tai Enosa continued his scoring streak and scored his third try of the day.  Roland Suniula and Eagle vet Paul Emerick all scored for the USA and ended up tallying 19 against France and claiming the Shield.

USA Sevens

Caravelli and his team arrive back in the USA on midday Sunday to prepare for the USA Sevens in Las Vegas.  Samoa, England, and Japan will face the Eagles in pool play.
