USA Wins Bowl in Adelaide

ADELAIDE - The USA has won the Bowl in the Adelaide Sevens tournament, the sixth leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series.  The Eagles beat Kenya 17-10 to secure four Series points and reclaim a spot in the top ten teams on the Series.

"We've had a couple of Shields and we said that we don't want any more Shields.  We want to walk away with points in the tournament," said Al Caravelli.

"But more importantly, we got better as the week went on.  We were trying to cut our turnovers and play a solid brand of defense, which we started to do."

The coach also said the team is in good shape going to the last two tournaments in London and Edinburgh, Scotland.

The Eagles played themselves in a position to get points against Kenya in the Bowl Final and capitalized on it.  Shalom Suniula started the Eagles scoring campaign in the Bowl Final, scoring after just one minute and converting his own try.

The class of Kenya's Collins Injera helped Kenya answer back with a score.  Three minutes later, Kenya opened the door for the Eagle attack with Oscar Ouma getting a yellow card and leaving his team a man down.

Colin Hawley, who really came into his own in Adelaide, scored just before the half to put the USA up 12-5.

Kenya's Biko Adema crossed the line first in the second half, but Hawley scored again for the Eagles and the USA kept Kenya out of the try zone for the rest of the match.

Colin Hawley has proved that he is worthy of a starting stop on the lineup to USA Head Coach, Al Caravelli.  Hawley scored the opening try in the match.  Eagle captain Matt Hawkins chipped in a five pointer as did former University of Oklahoma tight end, Taylor Mokate.

The Eagles were up 19-0 at halftime, but Scotland didn't waste any time in the second half.

Mike Adamson of Scotland scored inside of a minute and his teammate Ross Miller scored one moments later and all of a sudden it was a ball game.  USA 19, Scotland 12.

The wheels of Peter Tiberio and the fantastic interplay between the brothers Suniula, Roland and Shalom, resulted in a Tiberio try.

Tiberio, the Arizona Wildcat star, set up another nice try by Craigwell, weighing his options on the openside, but spotted a three on one on the blindside and shifted play that direction.  The speed of Craigwell allowed him to split the scrambling defense and score.

Scotland didn't go without a fight as Andrew Turnbull scored in the waning moments to bring the final score to 29-19.

The Eagles defeated Japan in the Adelaide Sevens Bowl Quarterfinals 22-19, with a last minute game winner from Paul Emerick.  Zack Test had two scores and Colin Hawley had one.

Test opened the scoring with a try inside one minute of kickoff and another one after five minutes, becoming his 19th and 20th tries of the HSBC Sevens World Series, making him one of the top five try-scoreres in the Series.

At half time, the USA was up 10-7 and Colin Hawley got the Eagles started off in the second half, scoring after only 30 seconds of play, bringing the tally to 15-7.  Japan wasn't done though.

Lepuha Latuila scored for Japan and a minute later, Sione Faamao dotted one down, giving Japan at 19-15 lead.

Paul Emerick dug the Eagles out of that four point deficit in injury time, scoring for the Eagles and securing them a spot in the Bowl Semis where they will face Scotland.

Scotland lost to England and Argentina on Day One, and beat Papua New Guinea and Cook Islands to get into the Bowl Semi.

A same-day broadcast of the final rounds will be shown on Universal Sports.  For listings in your area, visit
