Life and Golden Gate Clash in RSL Final
At 2pm EST on Saturday, May 21, the US Rugby Super League will conclude the 2011 season with the Championship game between Life University and San Francisco Golden Gate. The game will be played at Life University in Marietta GA.
This will be a rematch of the 2009 RSL decider, won by SFGG in a tight contest. Indeed SFGG is making its third straight appearance in the final, losing narrowly to New York AC last year. Life also lost to SFGG in the semi-final in 2010, so there will be lots of motivation for Life to get past SFGG and reclaim the title Life last won in 2008.
San Francisco was the dominant team in the West Conference, going 6-0, winning bonus points each week and ending the regular season with a massive +241 points difference. With a solid pack, talented backs and a deep bench, SFGG have very few weaknesses, and they also have the experience for the big game. But all may not be easy sailing for Paul Keeler's team. Many teams have been very competitive with SFGG, especially early, and it does take a lot of time for them to hit their stride. Opportunities may present themselves for Life, especially if Life is able to starve SFGG of possession, eliminate turnovers, and make it a close game late.
Similar to SFGG, Life was unbeaten in the East Conference, finishing the season with a 6-0 record, but had to overcome deficits late in a couple of games to preserve their unbeaten status. Life coach James Isaacson is happy to cede the favorite's tag to SFGG, saying "We are obviously the huge underdog given SFGG's previous results against us and their current form. A huge task awaits us against one of the most potent sides I've seen in many a year. They travel well also proven by their away results, and we will have to work to our maximum to contain and then expose any weakness they may have".
