Team USA to Face Kenya in Bowl Quarters

The USA Men's Eagle Sevens had solid performances against rugby sevens giants Samoa (12-21) and Fiji (14-21) on Saturday for the Emirates Airline Edinburgh Sevens.  Team USA had a rough go against Scotland in the last match of the day, falling to the hosts Scotland 45-7.

Matt Hawkins and Roland Suniula scored the USA's 12 points in the Samoa clash and were able to compete and keep the Samoans under pressure.  However Samoa was able to prevail in the end.  Fiji, who were in devastating form in London last week, were up next for th Eagles.

Justin Boyd gave his side a try in the first half to stay within seven points of Fiji at halftime.  The Eagles fought hard in the second half and were able to keep Fiji out of the try zone the enitre second half, except for an early Fijian score from Miteli Nacagilevu in the first minute of the second period.

The USA certainly gave Fiji a scare as a try from Matt Hawkins with only about two minutes remaining in the game brought the USA within striking distance of the London 7s finalists, but Fiji held on in the end to close the game out.  The Eagles would have a tall order after two very physical games against some big-bodied Samoans and Fijians, playing the hometown heroes Scotland in the last match of the day.

Scotland harnessed their crowd's enery and defeated Fiji earlier in the day and in order to advance to the cup quarterfinals, they would have to beat the Eagles by more than 40 points.

Scotland struck early and often against the Eagles, who looked a bit flat after two draining games against Fiji and Samoa.  Handling errors and penalties by the USA kept giving Scotland posession and forced the Eagles to tackle for most of the game.  Captain Matt Hawkins scored the only try for the USA in the encounter, but it was enough to eliminate Scotland from cup contention.

The USA will face Kenya tomorrow in the Bowl Quarterfinals at 3:44 a.m. MDT.  Watch LIVE on
