Day one sets up fierce battles for Women’s College DI & DII national titles

PALO ALTO, Cali. -- Day one of the 2013 Emirates Airline USA Rugby Women’s College DI & DII National Championships ended with two shutouts by Penn State and Washington, a strong finish by Winona, and an exciting back and forth match between Stanford and the 2012 DII Champions Norwich.

Washington State and Buffalo kicked off the USA Rugby National Championship Series on Saturday at Stanford University’s Steuber Rugby Stadium. Both DII teams battled until the end, but Washington State held Buffalo to zero tries and will advance to the finals where they will meet a strong Winona state team at 1 p.m. PST.  Quinnipiac will face Buffalo in the bronze match at 9 a.m. PST.

In the Women’s College DI semifinal matches, Penn State shut out Navy 47-0 with the help of several talented players including Eagles Sevens player Meya Bizer.  The 2012 DI Women’s College Champions, led by Women’s Eagles Head Coach Pete Steinberg, played a fundamentally sound match and proved that even after graduating 19 seniors last year, they can still have the depth to return to the finals.

In front of a vocal crowd of about 200 the final matchup of day one pitted returning DII champions Norwich against last year’s second place finisher Stanford.  After a drop goal from centerfield put Norwich ahead with only a few minutes left on the clock, Stanford answered back with a penalty kick to put the score at 31-30 but committed a penalty themselves in the remaining seconds. Norwich took the opportunity to kick and came away with the 33-31 win over Stanford.

With the strongest teams pulling out defiant wins, day two of the national tournament will surely see some thrilling matchups.  All games will be live streamed at
