HSAAs fall to Argentina U18s

The USA Rugby Boys High School All-Americans lost to Argentina U18s by a score of 9-57 Wednesday in Argentina. The HSAAs will have another shot at redemption Saturday when they end their South America Tour with another match against the national side.

It took Argentina six minutes to score their first try off a line-out driven maul and sustained pressure inside the HSAA 22-meter. HSAA fly-half Ben Cima responded with two penalty goals to give the visitors a 6-5 lead at 13 minutes.

Argentina established a successful pattern of dominating time of possession and field position, pinning the HSAAs into their 22-meter zone. The Pumas kicked to the corners, forcing clearance kicks by the HSAAs and sustained pressure. This culminated in three more tries from Argentina bringing the half-time score to 24-6.

The second half produced more of the same. The HSAAs, starved of possession, struggled to respond to a big, skilled, and fast Argentinian side. Five tries with four converted brought the total to nine tries on the day while the HSAAs managed three penalties from Ben Cima.

"The scoreline is virtually the same margin of defeat as last year,” said Head Coach Salty Thompson, despite the improvements in this year’s HSAA team. “The real test is how we bounce back on Saturday. The rematch gives our boys the rare opportunity to retest and improve against the best U18 National team in the Americas."
