USA National Team to compete in World University Games in Russia

KAZAN, Russian Federation – Fresh from a fourth-place finish at the 2013 Emirates Airline USA Rugby Women’s Collegiate DI National Championship, the Navy Women’s Rugby team has been selected to represent the United States at the World University Games in Kazan, beginning Sunday, July 14.

The Summer Universiade, an international multi-sport event organized for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation, will include rugby into its Games Program for the first time this year. Kazan is following in Moscow’s footsteps by hosting the Summer Universiade just weeks after the Russian capital hosted the 2013 IRB Rugby World Cup Sevens.

Coached by former Women’s Eagles Sevens player and head coach Sue Parker, the U.S. representative team is in Pool B with Great Britain, Italy, Belgium, Brazil, and China. Women’s Eagles Sevens players Sadie Anderson and Ryan Carlyle will join nine student-athletes in Russia. See the full rugby sevens schedule here.

In all, around 450 student-athletes will represent the U.S. in Kazan. Staged every two years with Summer and Winter editions, the Universiade is a two-week multi-sport and multi-cultural event, which provides a once-in-a-lifetime experience for student-athletes who are privileged to participate.
