Eagles Select XVs defeat Uruguay, finish second at ARC

LANGFORD, British Columbia – The Eagles Select XVs did their part Saturday to finish second at the 2013 IRB Americas Rugby Championship with a 20-8 win against Uruguay.

In a preview of an important Rugby World Cup 2015 Qualifier playoff scheduled for early next year, the Eagles fell behind early with Joaquin Prada’s penalty kick in the opening minutes. John Cowley answered with a penalty of his own in the 15th minute.

Neither team could break the deadlock for the remainder of the half as both defenses ensured a midfield battle for most of the 40 minutes.

Prop Nick Wallace made a nice run in the 45th minute to find space and Chris Chapman did the rest, scoring his first try of the tournament in the corner to make it 8-3 Eagles.

Captain Toby L’Estrange sent a midfield kick into Uruguay territory a few minutes later and Maximo de Achaval caught it to regain possession for the Eagles. They quickly moved it wide, getting it into the hands of Daniel Barrett, who scored in the corner.

Less than three minutes later, L’Estrange capitalized on a Uruguay miscue to score a try of his own. Cowely converted to increase the lead to 20-3.

Uruguay’s Francisco Jiminez scored his side’s only try in the 69th minute after numerous successful stands by the Eagles on their own try line. Barrett was sent to the bin for an incident after the play and the Eagles were forced to hold a 20-8 lead for the remaining 10 minutes of the game.

The Eagles stuck with their defensive structure and came away winners, putting their Americas Rugby Championship record at 2-1. They held the tiebreaker against Canada due to their win Tuesday, and, with Canada’s loss to Argentina Saturday, finish second in the standings, only having lost to the tournament champions.

The 2013 IRB Americas Rugby Championship campaign is a marked improvement from the 2012 incarnation, in which the Eagles developmental side finished 1-2.
