Canada overcomes Eagles in Atlanta 7s Cup Quarterfinal

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Women’s Eagles Sevens had a 12-7 first-half lead in the Atlanta 7s Cup Quarterfinal Sunday, but Canada came back to win 26-12 with three tries from Bianca Farella.

The Eagles fell behind in the second minute after Farella scored her first try. Victoria Folayan and Jessica Javelet made try-saving tackles just in front of the try line but the Canadian winger could not be stopped. Mandy Marchak kicked a wide-angled conversion to put Canada up 7-0.

Lauren Doyle responded a minute later with her first try of the weekend after picking up a loose pass on the wing in the Eagles’ defensive half. She showed the speed that put the Eagles in the Cup Final at last year’s Houston Sevens and tied the match at 7-7 for the home side.

Canada committed two penalties in quick succession within 10 meters of its try line and Folayan found Javelet for the sweeper’s third career try and a 12-7 lead.

The Eagles looked comfortable to go into the half with the lead, but Canada had ideas of its own. Ashley Steacy, who scored a try in Canada’s 31-0 win against the Eagles in pool play Saturday, juked Jillion Potter at the Eagles’ 10 after the whistle but was chased down by Javelet. Chislaine Landry managed to give Canada a 14-12 halftime lead with a try between the sticks a few phases later.

Farella scored her second try in the ninth minute and her third in the 13th, bringing the final score to 26-12.

Canada improves to 4-0 after an undefeated Pool A campaign against the Eagles, Australia and Canada Saturday. The Eagles will move into the Plate competition and face England in the Semifinal at 3:06 P.M. ET. England lost to Australia, 17-12, in the other Cup Quarterfinal, which was decided in a five-minute extra frame.
