Eagles lose, make first Cup Quarterfinal of Series at Tokyo Sevens

TOKYO, Japan – The Men’s Eagles Sevens suffered their first loss of Tokyo Sevens Saturday to France, 22-12.

After coming from behind to defeat Samoa and draw with Fiji in the opening two matches at Prince Chichibu Memorial Stadium, the Eagles looked to take an early lead. It was Julien Saubade who opened the scoring, however, by breaking tackles from Nick Edwards and Madison Hughes outside the corner of the try zone.

Zack Test scored his fourth try of the afternoon less than a minute later to draw the Eagles level at 5-5, but Julien Candelon regained the lead for France in the fourth minute with a try to make it 10-5.

Les Blues took the 10-5 lead into halftime, the smallest deficit the Eagles had following the conclusion of the first seven minutes.

France attacked the Eagles in the eighth minute and eventually moved close enough to allow Julien Jane to extend the lead to 17-5 with Terry Bouhraoua’s conversion.

In the 12th minute, Andrew Durutalo saw Brett Thompson make a good-angled run and passed the ball to his onrushing teammate for the Eagles’ second try. Hughes successfully kicked the conversion to bring the score to 17-12 with two minutes remaining.

A third comeback was not on the cards for the Eagles, however, as Bouhraoua took advantage of a poor Eagles pass in defensive territory to pad the French lead and bring the final score to 22-12.

With a 1-1-1 record at the end of pool play, the Eagles finish day one in Japan second in Pool C behind Fiji. The Eagles will move into the Cup competition for the first time during the current 2013-14 IRB HSBC Sevens World Series.
