Eagles lose to Australia, will play Samoa in Glasgow Sevens Bowl Quarterfinal
GLASGOW, Scotland – The Men’s Eagles Sevens will not make a third consecutive Cup Quarterfinal after a 34-14 loss to Australia at Emirates Airline Glasgow Sevens Saturday.
With losses to Spain and Scotland prior to the Eagles’ final match of Pool D, a win could only have pushed them from fourth to third. With the third loss, the Eagles will play for the Bowl Sunday.
The Eagles were on the attack early, but more penalties halted the momentum. Australia swiftly moved the ball downfield with a long run from Greg Jeloudev, who found an onrushing Cameron Clark for the match’s first try. He kicked the conversion, as well, to give Australia a 7-0 lead.
Garrett Bender responded for the Eagles with his team’s second try of the tournament. Captain Zack Test broke two tackles on his way out of the Eagles’ try zone before Bender broke a tackle at midfield to break the gain line. He dotted down between the uprights to set up Danny Barrett for a successful conversion to make the score level at 7-7.
Barrett tackled Jesse Parahi just before the try line in the sixth minute and the two slid into the in-goal. Referee James McPhail looked at the replay and awarded the try, seeing Parahi had kept possession of the ball once he got into the try zone.
Parahi scored his second a minute later as the result of quick passing from Australia. Two consecutive missed conversion attempts from Clark led to a 10-point lead increase at 17-7 at the half.
Penalties kept the Eagles from doing more damage, but fed Australia. Ed Jenkins scored a try in the ninth minute and Con Foley scored two minutes later to extend the lead to 29-7.
The Eagles put one more try on the scoreboard in the 14th minute. Mike Te’o offloaded to Test near midfield and the captain chipped the ball behind the Australia defense. Te’o was blocked from getting to the ball, but Will Holder followed the play to get his second career try in his third match with the Eagles.
Te’o kicked the conversion to draw the Eagles closer at 29-14, but Peter Schuster found his way across the try line before the full time whistle blew to bring the final score to 34-14.
The Eagles defeated Samoa at both Tokyo Sevens and Cathay Pacific HSBC Hong Kong Sevens. The Bowl Quarterfinal match will begin Sunday, May 4, at 5:30 A.M. ET. Follow @USARugby on Twitter for live match updates and watch Emirates Airline Glasgow Sevens live on Universal Sports.
