Eagles winless after day one at Marriott London Sevens

LONDON, England – The Men’s Eagles Sevens suffered three losses in pool play at Marriott London Sevens Saturday to set up a Bowl Quarterfinal matchup with Spain Sunday, May 11, at 4:22 A.M. ET.

Madison Hughes, called into the squad as injury relief following injuries to Mike Te’o and Ryan Matyas at Emirates Airline Glasgow Sevens, started the Eagles’ first match against Kenya and set up Danny Barrett’s first-half try to give his team the lead. It would be the only try the Eagles would score, however, as Kenya rattled off four unanswered tries to take the 22-5 win.

Matt Hawkins’ squad was bolstered by Carlin Isles – who made the trip from Glasgow to fill in for the Eagles – in the second match against Canada, and the speedster made an immediate impact with a try in the second minute. Zack Test scored two tries of his own to give the Eagles a 19-0 halftime lead, but Canada came back strong in the second half to hand the Eagles their second loss of the final tournament of the 2013-14 IRB HSBC Sevens World Series, 22-19.

Pono Haitsuka gave the Eagles another early lead in the first minute of their final Pool B match against Samoa, but two first-half tries and three more in the second half for Samoa meant a third loss for the Eagles, who fell, 27-10, to the pool winner.
