Eagles one win short of reaching Gold Coast Sevens Cup Quarterfinal

GOLD COAST, Queensland – The first day of Gold Coast Sevens came to a close Saturday with the Men’s Eagles Sevens’ 26-12 loss to Argentina at Cbus Super Stadium.

With the loss, the Eagles finish pool play with five points, keeping them just out of reach of the Cup round on Day Two.

Going into the third Pool D match, the Eagles controlled their own destiny. With a win and margin of victory of at least five points, Mike Friday’s team would have secured a second-place finish in the pool and a date with New Zealand in the Cup Quarterfinal.

Argentina opened the scoring inside three minutes after Ramiro Moyano was able to round Perry Baker on the wing. The speedster redeemed himself minutes later, however, with a try of his own following a set of quick, accurate passes by the Eagles. Madison Hughes outdid his opposite number with the boot to give the Eagles the slim, 7-5, lead.

Reminiscent of the Eagles’ earlier matches against Canada and England, Argentina managed to find a breakthrough in the dying seconds of the half. Rodrigo Etchart dotted down for Los Pumas, who took a 12-7 lead into the half.

With a chance to earn serious points from the first leg of the IRB HSBC Sevens World Series, Friday substituted Carlin Isles and Maka Unufe early in the second half. Before they could make an impact, the Eagles conceded a third Argentinian try from Javier Rojas in the 10th minute. Santiago Cordero nailed the conversion to extend the lead to 19-7.

Nic Edwards capitalized on a well-worked team move in the final minute of the match with a try, but it was too late to mount a comeback. Furthermore, Cordero dotted down one final time to give Argentina the 26-12 win.

After a promising start to the day, which saw Zack Test record a hat trick in a win against Canada, the Eagles just fall short of the Cup round at Gold Coast Sevens. Japan awaits the Americans in the Bowl Quarterfinal, which will kick off at 8:04 P.M. ET.
