Reigning Champion UM-Duluth, three others advance to Men’s Division II Semifinals

BOULDER, Colo. – Four teams remain in the quest to be crowned 2014 USA Rugby Men’s Division II College National Champion. James Madison, Notre Dame College, UM-Duluth and UW-Whitewater each escaped Nov. 21-22’s Regional Playoff rounds undefeated to reach the Dec. 6-7 National Championship weekend.

Playing on its home pitch, Salisbury looked every bit capable of reaching its third straight DII National Championship after a 41-0 defeat of Roger Williams. However, Notre Dame proved to have plenty in the tank after getting past Furman, 17-15, by ending Salisbury’s season with an 18-15 victory at the South Regional’s second day.

UW-Whitewater, whose explosive attack was on display all weekend at the Northeast Regional, advances to the DII Semifinal to face Notre Dame College. After dropping 69 points on Bentley in the weekend’s first match, Whitewater poured on another 63 points in the National Quarterfinals against Vermont.

While Salisbury won’t be returning to the Championship Final, reigning National Champion UM-Duluth is a match away from defending its title. Duluth dominated its way through the Midwest field by beating Colorado College and UW-Stout by a combined 138-5 score.

In the Mid-Atlantic Regional, fly half Chris Kunkel scored 18 points to lead James Madison to a day one win over Rowan, 55-14. On day two, winger Kyla Yamane scored two first-half tries to help see the Dogs to a 17-6 victory over Towson and an appearance at the Men’s DII Semifinal, where they’ll face UM-Duluth.

The Dec. 6 National Semifinals will be played at Furman University in Greenville, S.C. A consolation match and the 2014 USA Rugby Men’s DII National Championship game will take place the following day. All four matches will be aired live on USA Rugby TV.
