Women’s Eagles Sevens in France for Series’ End

CLERMONT-FERRAND, France - Lilly Durbin is set to make her HSBC World Rugby Women's Sevens Series debut at the tender age of 17 this weekend as the Women's Eagles Sevens end the 2015-16 season at HSBC Clermont-Ferrand Sevens.

Richie Walker's Eagles currently trail sixth-place Russia by two points in the Series Standings heading into the final round at Stade Gabriel-Montpied. The U.S. will play England, Kenya, and Spain in Pool A play Saturday, May 28, prior to Sunday's knockout rounds.

Ten of the 12 Eagles selected to the Series leg in France went 6-0 as part of the USA Falcons development side that competed at the London Invitational Sevens tournament last weekend. Durbin and Kelly Griffin move in to the squad, the latter having missed the two most recent rounds in Atlanta and Vancouver to injury.

Durbin was named to the latest residency roster at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., with the southern California native set to partner former Fallbrook High School teammate Richelle Stephens in the U.S. kit. Stephens is making her fourth Series appearance this weekend after debuting at Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens to begin the season, six months after a successful Rio 2016 Olympic Summer Games qualification campaign with the Eagles at the 2015 NACRA Sevens Championships.

Kathryn Johnson opened the season with the Eagles in Dubai before leaving the residency program, but returned to the OTC last month to earn her place amongst her U.S. teammates in the squad for the upcoming weekend.

The Eagles that were in the U.K. with the Falcons went up against development sides from top-tier sevens nations Canada, England (Team GB), and France, with Brazil, Japan, Ireland, and Spain rounding out the training competition. This weekend, the U.S. will help welcome Kenya, qualified for Rio, to the circuit in pool play, while players with England and Spain will be looking for redemption after losses to the Falcons in London.

The two-day tournament to end the Series kicks off Saturday, May 28, with the Eagles' first match against England set for 5:44 a.m. ET. Clermont-Ferrand Sevens will be available at no charge to viewers in the United States live on The Rugby Channel.
