After each reaching the Cup Semifinals in 2016, Life University, Lindenwood University and Penn State won their respective pools to advance to the Cup rounds. 2015 Cup Finalist Central Washington, Ivy Champions Dartmouth and National Intercollegiate Rugby Association side Army finished pool play with two wins to stay above water, as well.

Big Ten Champions Michigan and two-time reigning DI Spring Champions UC Davis also squeak into the Cup Quarterfinals despite accumulating a 1-2 record over pool play.

For the four teams that missed out on the Cup competition, consolation fixtures are awaiting them Sunday, May 21. Princeton has drawn the Lone Star State's best team Texas A&M, and last year's Division II National Champions in sevens Davenport will take on Montana State.
