AIG Men's Collegiate All-American Sevens capture Bowl victory at RugbyTown

Top collegiate talent with strong showing in Glendale, celebrate Bowl win after jam packed weekend of play.

GLENDALE, Colo. - Over a warm weekend in Colorado, the AIG Men's Collegiate All-Americans Sevens squad put together an impressive performance to seize a Bowl final win on Sunday capping off the RugbyTown 7s tournament at Infinity Park. The upcoming athletes brought down opposing young talent, Atavus All-Stars, 25-7 with a strong defensive showing.

"I was delighted with the team's showing at RugbyTown 7s." said head coach, Steve Lewis, "Finishing with a highly credible 5-2 record against top international and domestic competition was a real achievement and credit to the entire squad."

The collegiate standouts began Pool play with a convincing 2-1 record after Friday's play. The only loss coming in a well fought match against an Olympic caliber team in the Fiji Selects. Shortly following the loss, the All-Americans marched toward two consecutive wins over the Canada Maple Leafs and eventual Bowl final opponent, Atavus All-Stars.

Come Saturday morning, a final Pool C match against UK based Ramblin' Jesters resulted in a loss, placing the All-Americans in the 4th seed and set to compete for the Bowl title as bracket play began. From here on out, it was nothing but victory. After handily defeating the local Glendale Merlins, 38-5 in the Bowl quarterfinal, the team moved on to Sunday morning with a semifinal victory over 2016 Cup Champions, Denver 7s Selects. Through to the Bowl final, the All-Americans picked up a repeat win over the Atavus All-Stars, wrapping up a promising weekend of elite rugby.

"Considering our only losses came against the eventual finalists, Fiji Selects and the Ramblin' Jesters, I think we can consider the whole week a success in the ongoing development of these young players..." continued Lewis, "... a few put their hands up for camp selection in front of national team coach Mike Friday."

As a busy stretch of days continue, 3 players from the All-American squad will find themselves in Chula Vista, California for the USA Rugby Sevens High Performance Camp. Captain Cody Melphy, Lorenzo Thomas and Maceo Brown have been invited by USA Men's Sevens head Coach Mike Friday, with the latter two receiving an invite after their impressive play at RugbyTown. "We definitely want to have a closer look at these players." said Friday. "Maceo was impressive on the attack and defensive side, he's an exciting player to watch," Friday continued, "While Lorenzo is a player we known about, and have been impressed by his resiliency. We look forward to challenging that resiliency in the days ahead at camp."

The Sevens High Performance Camp kicks off this Wednesday at the Elite Athlete Training Center in Southern California. Along with the three All-Americans, an additional 6 RugbyTown 7s participants will be in attendance. Jeremy Misailegalu, Kavon Williams and Siale Maka from the Denver 7s Select, Connor Wallace-Sims and Naima Fualaau of Tiger 1823, and Anthony Welmers from Army.
