7s Referee Program Concludes

The first-ever USA Rugby 7s Referee Pathway has concluded.

Boulder, CO - December saw the completion of a very successful 2017 USA Rugby 7s Referee Pathway Program. The Program was designed to identify and develop elite 7s referees while also providing outreach and training for the 7s referee and referee coaching community across the US.

The Program kicked off at the Las Vegas Invitational in 2017 and continued with the USA College 7s Championship and College Rugby Championship, culminating in the National 7s Club Championship in Blaine, Minnesota.

60 referees and 25 referee coaches participated in the 2017 Program. The Program was geared toward creating a strong team atmosphere where referees, ARs, coaches and managers worked together to create a positive environment for learning and development. We tried a lot of new things and continued to grow as a team as the season progressed. The top group of referees proceeded into international assignments in the fall and winter with tremendous success including 2 of our referees to be invited to Dubai to perform on an international stage!

After evaluation and improvements made, the National 7s Pathway Program continues in 2018! The Program kicks off in Las Vegas again the first week of March so make plans to be there for the LVI (March 1-3)!. Wednesday evening before the LVI, we will again present High Performance related information and systems. Referees will work in teams of 3 in the Elite and Open brackets at the LVI and coaching will be provided throughout. The LVI is a tremendous opportunity for referees to show their skills in a high pressure tournament that still has a fun and festive atmosphere. There will be more training, identification, and development opportunities throughout the year so don't be discouraged if you cant make the LVI. The Rugby 7s World Cup will be taking place in July in San Francisco which will add some flavor into the mix this year plus more exciting domestic and international events!
