Mid Atlantic’s Weekend Produces Significant Results

With the last few weeks of the regular season approaching, each game takes on added significance.

Women's Division II
The lone DII match saw Doylestown defeat the Norfolk Storm, 43-20. Doylestown sits in first place with two weeks left in the season.

Women's Division III
With only the top two places in each division advancing to the MAC playoffs, the last few weeks of the season are immensely important. The North division wrapped its spring on Saturday as the Northeast Philadelphia Irish completed its undefeated 8-0 season with a 15-14 victory over Philadelphia. Philadelphia will advance to the playoffs in second place and South Jersey finished in third after a 56-7 win against Lehigh Valley.

In the South, NOVA kept its hold on second place by stomping Rappahannock, 40-5. Four more games are left over the next few weeks to determine the final standings in the South.

Men's Division I
With the top four spots of DI locked in last weekend, the seedings are the only things left to be settled. Current #1 seed, Rocky Gorge, remained undefeated with a 33-17 come from behind win against the #4 Potomac Exiles and second place Norfolk Blues are right behind the leader at 10-1 following a 39-16 backline beatdown of the #3 Pittsburgh Harlequins. In their last games of the season, Washington Irish captured fifth place in its first year of DI rugby by defeating Schuylkill River, 43-14.

The final game left on the DI schedule is Rocky Gorge at the Norfolk Blues on Saturday. Gorge won the first meeting in November by four points, but this time, the regular season title and the #1 seed is at stake.

Men's Division II
Except for a few games this Saturday, the playoffs are set for DII on April 28th. Doylestown capped its 8-0 season with a 73-10 barrage against Old Gaelic to secure the #1 overall seed and will play Norfolk's DI-B side in the first quarterfinal. Following a 34-0 shutout of Washington, the South winner, NOVA will contend with Old Gaelic in the #2 vs #7 match. Rocky Gorge's 7-1 DI-B squad enters the quarterfinals as the #3 seed and draws Philadelphia-Whitemarsh in the first round. Lastly, the Lancaster Roses are the #4 seed after its 36-28 win over Philadelphia-Whitemarsh and will play the 5-2 Raleigh Vipers.

Men's Division III
This past Saturday concluded the DIII regular season. To decide the seeding in the North, Phoenixville White Horse won the EPRU championship with a 53-22 beating of Wilkes-Barre and Reading almost quadrupled Harrisburg, 44-12, for the third place and entrance to the show.

In the Central, Western Suburbs rebounded from its first loss to outplay North Bay, 28-14, for the top spot in the division. Five teams ended the season tied with 4-4 records with Frederick and Washington taking third and fourth.

The DIII quarterfinal pairings are #1 Phoenixville White Horse vs #8 Blacksburg, #2 Virginia vs #7 Reading, #3 Western Suburbs vs #6 James River, and #4 Wilkes-Barre vs #5 North Bay.
