Winter Weather Puts a Damper on Midwest Matches

Despite being well into April, the Midwest teams faced some shocking winter weather this past weekend resulting in more than a few cancellations. Those teams brave enough to face the weather encountered brutal field conditions along with unrelenting rain and snow.

Chicago Lions vs Chicago Griffins (Premier Division)
The Chicago Lions forged ahead against longtime rivals the Chicago Griffins. While the first half remained relatively close to end 10-0 in favor of the Lions, the second half showed an opening of the flood gates to result in a 42-0 shutout against the Griffins. Needless to say, kicking conditions were unfavorable for both sides with only one conversion the entire game.

‏Cleveland Crusaders vs Columbus Rugby (Premier Division)
Ohio teams Cleveland and Columbus paid no regard to the weather as they faced off in a closely matched game. Cleveland led the majority of the match but a costly yellow card in the last fifteen minutes provided Columbus with the opportunity to punch in a game winning try for a final of 19-17.

Palmer College Dragons vs Wisconsin Rugby (Premier Division)
The Palmer College Dragons continued their undefeated season this weekend by defeating Wisconsin Men's Club in an epic 52-0 despite the game being called early due to weather.

Toledo Celtics vs Canton Maddogs
Canton Men Maddogs lost in a hard fought away match versus an elite Toledo team. Canton only brought 15 men and while both teams played in freezing weather with pouring rain, Toledo came away the clear victor.

Iowa City Ducks vs Northwest Woodsmen,  St. Cloud Bottom Feeders vs Eastside Banshees  Presque Isle Scallywags vs Detroit Tradesmen D3, Bremer County Bucks vs St. Paul Jazz Pigs, Milwaukee Black & Blue vs Oshkosh Pigs, Jackson Fenians vs South Pittsburgh Hooligans RFC were all cancelled.

Women's Senior Select Sides

Most Midwest women's teams has this past weekend off to make way for the first round of the Senior Select Sides tournament. Although Minnesota's Select Side was unable to attend due to the weather, both Wisconsin and Illinois Select Sides faced off in Madison for a full 80 minute match amidst a hail storm. Despite having just 16 players, Illinois was able to hold off the pack dominant Wisconsin team initially. However poor conditions left Illinois unable to get the ball out to their backline while Wisconsin was able to drive in three tries and one conversion.

Women's U24 Select Sides

Midwest U24 Select Sides made the trek to Madison as well with the first match ending in a huge triumph for Illinois ICAS over their Iowa counterparts, a 51-0 shutout. That afternoon, Wisconsin and Ohio battled it out to end in a 31-13 victory for Wisconsin. Due to the harsh weather, Sunday's championship match was cancelled with the hope of rescheduling in the near future.
