Atlantic North Sets Regional Champions

Over the weekend Men's teams faced off to determine which teams would advance to the Atlantic North Championships and represent the region at the National Quarter Finals.

Women's Division I Playoffs:
The Atlantic North Semifinals were held this weekend and it was a semifinals that left no uncertainty as to who the better teams were in each match. The first game between the Village Lions and Albany Knickerbockers resulted in a 34-0 victory to the Knickerbockers.  Albany was able to score 29 of their points in the first half. The Lions were able to tighten the screws, defensively, but were not able to contribute any points.

The Knickerbockers would face the winner of the Boston Rugby Monmouth Renegades fixture. It was another shut out with Boston piling on 55 points against the women from New Jersey. Boston and Albany will face off to determine who advances to The National Quarterfinals.

Women's Division II Playoffs:
In the second division for the women, it was much of the same as teams were able to assert their dominance over their competition. The first match saw Providence shut out Brooklyn Rugby and run away with a 79-0 win. Nazareth Cardoso led the way and was able to cross for a hat trick.

In the second semifinal it was Danbury that were on the losing side of things as they went down to the Hartford Wild Roses 58-12.

Empire Men's Division II Championship:
It was a tight affair between the Morris Lions and the Fairfield Yankees. In the first half alone there were four lead changes. It was Morris who got on top first via a penalty goal, the teams then traded tries to end the half. It was the Yankees who were on top as they headed into the half. The second half was all Lions, as the New Jersey-men were able to put up thirteen unanswered points. The Yankees crossed in the 79th minute but it was too little too late, and the Lions won the game 23-19. The Lions will take on the winner of the New England Division II for a shot at the National Quarters.

Empire Men's Division III Championship:
The Division III Championship for Empire was not a close one. Long Island Rugby blew by the Danbury Mad Hatters to claim an emphatic 75-26 victory. It was a tightly contested match in the beginning with a call and response start, but eventually Long Island's attack was too potent for Danbury to keep up with.

New England Division II Championship:
Two teams with an intimate knowledge of one another went up against each other to determine who would be the New England Division II champions, as the Mystic Barbarians traveled to Newport. It was Mystic who got on the board first through a penalty goal, but Newport responded with 19 unanswered points to have a command of the game from the get go. Mystic was able to score a try before the half and reduce the deficit. Mystic weren't able to capitalize on the momentum they had built and Newport came out in the second half jazzed, scoring the first twelve points of the second half. Newport winning 38-25.

New England Division III Championship:
Boston Maccabi was able to take care of business against the Charles River Rats over the weekend. Charles River had been able to pull off an upset the weekend prior by knocking off the undefeated Providence Rugby courtesy of a last minute score, but they had no cards left up their sleeves this weekend. Boston Maccabi shut them out, winning 38-0.
