Men's Division IV Championship Headlined Red River's Weekend

The Texas Rugby Union hosted the inaugural TRU Championships to crown the TRU Men's Division IV and Women's Division III champions Saturday at Keller Sports Park in Keller, Texas.

Fort Worth D4 defeated Houston Athletic Rugby Club D4 25-22 to claim the Division IV Championship.

Fort Worth head coach Theo Van Wyk, said he was proud of the victory for his team.

The D4 squad was used to give playing time to players new to the game and to give a chance for the players that had retired to also be involved in a competitive manner with the club.

After a nearly scoreless half hour to start the match. Fort Worth scored the opening try of the match in the 28th minute to take the 5-0 lead. Three minutes later Fort Worth increased their lead to 12-0 with a try followed by a conversion kick. Four minutes before halftime Houston got on the scoreboard with a far side breakaway that started on their side of the halfway line. Houston converted the kick and were now down 12-7.

In the early minutes of the second half, Houston broke away for another try off of a long run. The teams were now even 12-12. In the 47th minute down near the try line Houston with some quick passes were able to get it into the hands of Derrick Paul who got the try to give Houston their first lead of the match 17-12.Houston increased their lead with a 56th minute try and were now up 22-12. Fort Worth then mounted a comeback attempt as they scored a try and converted the conversion to cut the Houston lead 22-19 with twenty minutes remaining in the half. A penalty was awarded to Fort Worth and they converted a penalty kick to tie the match up 22-22 with twelve minutes remaining.

With five minutes to go another penalty was called on Houston, this time for not releasing the tackled man, Logan Legg converted the penalty kick to give Fort Worth the 25-22 lead. Houston attempted to take back the lead, but the Fort Worth defense remained disciplined and were able to keep Houston off the scoreboard and give them the win and the D4 crown 25-22.

Denton Rugby defeated the Corpus Christi Dogfish 78-19 to claim the consolation Plate.

Alliance II was awarded the Bowl and defeated in an exhibition a team labled the North Texas Motley 28-19.

The Bay Area women's team were crowned champions in D3 after their performance in the regular season and they played the Dallas Harlequins a D2 team in an exhibition match and the fell to Dallas 33-10.
