Red River Has Found Its Champions

It was championship weekend in the Red River Rugby Conference. Champions were crowned in Men’s D1, D2, D3 and Women’s D2. All matches were held at Burr Field in Austin, TX.

Women's D2
In semi-final play the Austin Valkyries edged out Tulsa 29-22. The Dallas Reds upset Little Rock 36-26 and advanced to the final.

In the women's Division II final, the Austin Valkyries defeated the Dallas Reds 51-14 and are the Division II champions.

They now advance to play the Old Pueblo Lightning in the national quarter-final.

Men's Division I:
In the opening round the Austin Blacks topped the Dallas Harlequins 44-24. The Dallas Reds defeated the Glendale Merlins to set-up a showdown against the Austin Blacks.

Austin and Dallas were meeting for the third time in four years in the Division I final. Austin got on the board first with an Adam Armstrong penalty kick in the 7th minute. Austin led 3-0. Dallas tied the score at three all with a Blake Bolton penalty kick. Austin retook the lead on Armstrong's foot as he converted a penalty kick in the 16th minute. Austin on top 6-3. An offsides call on Dallas, led to a third penalty kick awarded to Austin. Armstrong converted his third penalty of the match to increase the Austin lead to 9-3. Dallas responded with a try in the 23rd minute to cut the Austin lead 9-8. After some excellent phase work from Dallas they were awarded a penalty kick five meters out and took the lead 11-9 with a Bolton kick.

In the second half Armstrong gave Austin the lead with a penalty kick in the 47th minute. Austin led 12-11. Dallas then drove and secured a forward-led maul try and retook the lead. Bolton converted the conversion and Dallas took the lead 18-12. A fifth Armstrong penalty kick in the 54th minute cut the Dallas lead 18-15. Austin retook the lead with a try in 62nd minute and an Armstrong conversion kick gave the Austin Blacks a 22-18 lead.

A late penalty was called on Austin deep in their territory. Dallas needing a try to clinch the victory attempted to go for a try but a knock-on was called on a pass and that ended the match. Austin took the victory and for the third time in four years are the Division 1 champions.

Austin will advance to play Belmont Shore in the national semi-final.

Men's Division II:
The Dallas Reds II defeated Houston United II 48-19 to advance to the final.  San Antonio took down Tulsa 74-28 to secure their place in the Division II final.

San Antonio completed a strong weekend with a 50-24 victory over Dallas Reds and will advance to the national quarter-final where they will face the winner of the San Diego Old Aztecs and Oceanside Chiefs match.

Men's Division III
Austin Blacks D3 were able to win versus Houston United III 58-14. Alliance Rugby won their first playoff match versus Galveston 43-21.

In the Division III final the Austin Blacks secured the D3 Men's title with a 58-7 victory over Alliance.

The Blacks will meet the Santa Fe Santos in the national quarter-finals.
