South Recap: Upsets Run Through the South

While there were few games in the South, there was still plenty of rugby action played across the region. 

Women's Division II 

Two women's games took place on Saturday, February 16 across the state of Florida.

First, the Jacksonville Sinners played host for their matchup against the Tampa Bay Krewe.  However, the home field failed to give Jacksonville the edge, as Tampa beat the home team 48-7.

In the Sunshine State's other contest Saturday, the Orlando Griffins did use their home field advantage, as Orlando defeated the Indian River Raptors 53-20.

Men's Division II:


The Division II men's action starts with a trio of contests in the Carolinas and Georgia Conference. The Greenville Griffins were not match for Southern Pines, as they only scored one unconverted try, to Southern Pines  80. Further south Saturday, Clemson Rugby D2 hosted the Atlanta Renegades.  In this matchup, Atlanta took Clemson to the cleaners, blasting the home team 104 to 8.  Also, in Atlanta, Atlanta Old White blanked perennial powerhouse Life University Running Eagles 21-0.


Down in the Sunshine State, four games were played Saturday. The Miami Tridents hosted the previously unbeaten Naples Hammerheads, defeating Naples 33-22.

The Tampa Bay Krewe's D2 men's side also traveled to Jacksonville.  In the end, the same score gave the Krewe the win, Tampa Bay 48 to Jacksonville 7.  Sean Christopher scored the lone try for Jacksonville.

In Orlando, the Griffins hosted the Okapi Wanderers.  Orlando capitalized on its home field advantage, beating Okapi 52-5.

Wrapping up Florida's Division II action, the Boca Raton Buccaneers defeated the Fort Lauderdale Knights 57-17.

True South
Only one game took place Saturday in the True South conference.  The Nashville RFC beat the Memphis Blues 37 to 23

Men's Division III

First, the Sarasota Surge 20 beat the Tampa Bay Krewe 20 to 10. Also, on Saturday, the Palm Beach Panthers defeated the Miami Tridents D2 side 31 to 9. Finishing up Florida's contests the Saint Petersburg Pelicans upended the Gainesville Hogs 34 to 11.

Georgia played home to three Division III games on Saturday. In the first, the Atlanta Renegades rolled all over the Gwinnett Lions 67 to 15. Just a little farther east, the Augusta Maddogs hosted the Atlanta Old White's D3 side, defeating the visiting team 29 to 17. Finishing up Division III action in Georgia, the Savannah Shamrocks crushed High Country Rugby 42 to 8.

True South
Finishing up this weekend's USA Rugby South coverage, the Pensacola Aviators beat Mobile's Battleship RFC 19 to 12.  Aviator Andrei Procopi scored Pensacola's lone try. Finally, the Panama City Beach Hurricanes defeated the Okaloosa Islanders 50 to 21.
