Oaks outlast Eagles in Bucharest

 World Rugby

BUCHAREST, Romania - Will Holder scored the Men's Eagles' only try in a 23-10 loss to Romania Saturday at Stadionul Arcul de Triumf.

The defeat is the second for the Eagles on their November Tour, which kicked off against the New Zealand Maori All Blacks last weekend at "The Rugby Weekend Presented by AIG" in Chicago. Holder converted his own try and kicked a late penalty goal in Saturday's meeting with 16th-ranked Romania, accounting for all 10 points. John Mitchell's squad finishes its tour against Tonga in Spain next Saturday, Nov. 19.

Romania used its pack and set pieces to great effect in the first half, scoring the match's first try through lock Johan Van Heerden five minutes after center Florin Vlaicu missed a first-up penalty goal attempt. The backs proved dangerous, as well, scoring the second try in the 11th minute when full back Catalin Fercu chased down his scrum half's kick over the defense.

Vlaicu extended the lead to 15-0 after 16 minutes before Viorel Lucaci managed to put the ball down in the corner through a Blaine Scully tackle five minutes from the break.

Reinforcements from the bench helped the Eagles gain more of a foothold on the match in the second half, breaking the gain line on more occasions and forcing the Romanian defense to defend rapidly. Holder used the space created by the forwards to dive over the try line beside the posts in the 53rd minute before Romanian hooker Eugen Capatana was sent to the bin for denying the full back another potential scoring opportunity.

The Eagles could not turn the man-advantage into points, however, scoring a penalty goal once the Romanian was released from the sin bin. Though there was more attacking play for Mitchell's squad and a slew of penalties against the host in the latter stages of the game, Vlaicu put the margin out of reach for the visitors for a 23-10 final.

The re-introduction of several overseas professionals will strengthen the depth for next weekend's match against Tonga after a brutally physical encounter with Romania. That match from San Sebastián, Spain, will kick off Nov. 19 at 11 a.m. ET, and will be broadcast on The Rugby Channel.
