Loss means little as Eagles earn top seed in Sydney pool

SYDNEY, Australia - The Men's Eagles Sevens suffered several setbacks in their final match of pool play at HSBC Sydney7s, a 17-14 loss to Russia at Allianz Stadium.

With Cup qualification secure, Head Coach Mike Friday made a few changes to the starting seven, but was forced to empty the bench with Pago Haini and Don Pati sustaining injuries prior to halftime. Due to Argentina's draw with Canada in the other late matchup, the U.S. takes the No. 1 seed out of Pool D for a Quarterfinal matchup at 8:42 p.m. ET Saturday. The Eagles will play either England or South Africa depending on results.

Carlin Isles scored two long-range tries in the loss: a seventh-minute run following a defensive recovery of a Russian kick and a remarkable break to beat three defenders in the 10th minute. The second try gave the Eagles a 14-12 lead with little time remaining, but a yellow card to Danny Barrett was turned into points by Russia before the final whistle for the 19-14 final.

Sydney7s is being broadcast live on World Rugby's Sevens Series website and is available to viewers in the United States free of charge.
