Rugby World Cup 2019 Qualifiers even through 80 minutes

HAMILTON, Ontario - The aggregate score line of the Rugby World Cup 2019 Qualifier between the USA Men's Eagles and Canada will be even heading into the July 1 game in San Diego following a 28-28 draw at Tim Hortons Field Saturday.

Nick Civetta and Mike Te'o each scored two tries north of the border as the Head Coach John Mitchell's side remained unbeaten against the border rival in six matches. Limited tickets are available for the return leg at University of San Diego's Torero Stadium, and can be purchased on the school's athletics website.

Canada rallied back from a 10-point deficit in the final 30 minutes of the game on its home soil, scoring a converted try through most-capped player Aaron Carpenter 10 minutes from time before fly half Shane O'Leary slotted a 79th-minute penalty for the 28-28 score line. U.S. fly half A.J. MacGinty, perfect with four conversions, missed a late drop-goal attempt on one of the final plays of the game that would have seen the Eagles to home-field advantage with an advantage in the aggregate score line.

The Eagles put themselves short-handed on two occasions in the second half, but conceded just three points with 14 players on the field. Cam Dolan was sent to the bin in the 59th minute for bringing down a maul close to the American try line, five minutes after hooker James Hilterbrand was released from his session for a yellow card-worthy offense on Canadian scrum half Phil Mack. The Eagles only allowed an O'Leary penalty kick from the first yellow card, and Te'o turned a threatening 53rd-minute Canadian attack into points the other way with an intercept-try from 85 meters to give the Eagles their 28-18 lead.

The Eagles trailed from the seventh minute of the match but held a 21-15 lead at halftime thanks to a late try on the final play of the half from a counter-attack try finished by Te'o. U.S. captain and caps leader Todd Clever took the ball from a maul in the 36th minute to the try line for Civetta to dot down, 15-14. It was Civetta's third try in three games for the Eagles this summer, following one against Ireland in the June 10 Emirates Airline Summer Series match and one earlier in Saturday's contest.

Paddy Ryan, in his second appearance for the Eagles, gave away a penalty for O'Leary to kick for three points in the 25th minute, not long after DTH van der Merwe scored his second try of the match in the corner of the try zone. Canada barely held a 7-0 lead in the first 10 minutes before Marcel Brache offload to Civetta in front of the try line for the Eagles' first score in the ninth minute.

Mitchell and staff will be pleased with the team's ability to turn possession into points, but will want more time with the ball on home soil when they host the second leg of the Rugby World Cup 2019 Qualifier Saturday, July 1, at Torero Stadium. Tickets can be purchased online before they sell out, while those unable to attend can watch the match live on The Rugby Channel.
