Men's Eagles Sevens Concede First Dubai Victory to Argentina

The Men's Eagles began their 2017-18 HSBC World Sevens Series campaign facing an Argentinian squad relentless in their hunt for victory during the first match of the Emirates Airline Dubai Sevens Tournament. While the United States showed defensive and offensive capabilities, Argentina found ways to slice through the defense on their way to a 14-22 win in the first match of pool play (Pool D).

The match began with the Argentinians determined to show off their strong defensive capabilities. Wasting no time, the squad put themselves on the board first allowing Fernando Luna to dash past Eagle defenders and cross the line for his first dot down.

A few minutes later, the United States was ready to make a stand. After allowing Argentina to win the ball in a lineout and sprint towards the try line, the Eagles snapped into gear and recovered the ball, placing it in the hands of Steven Tomasin who drove across the pitch to touch down for a try of his own. Captain Madison Hughes converted and the Americans officially had 7 on the board.

Just before the half, the tables turned once again. Argentina had no trouble sneaking through the Eagles defense, using their speed and agility to drive in another score. With the final seven minutes of play remaining, the Americans needed to build their momentum quickly and find a way to fight back.

When play resumed, USA quickly took possession, using a brilliantly balanced attacking skill that saw Danny Barrett take the ball and pass it to Carlin Isles for the try. With the United States now in the lead, Argentina could feel the pressure.

Soon after, a mishandled Argentinian ball almost landed in the hands of U.S. speedster Carlin Isles, until the Eagles' opponents found a way to turn pressure into strategy and lead their own Conrado Roura to capture the the lead with his second try. With two minutes to spare, Argentina forced a USA turnover, converted it for another score and sealed their victory, 14-22.
