Men's Sevens Rout Scotland in Second Match of Pool D

SYDNEY, AUS. – The Men’s Eagles Sevens were try-scoring machines against Scotland, cruising their way to a 26-12 victory in the second match of pool play at Sydney Sevens. Four tries on four consecutive possessions preserved a beautiful shutout in the first half; and, though Scotland tried to recover, the United States held on for the win.

USA’s World Rugby Player of the Year Perry Baker and Stephen Tomasin combined for 21 points (tries + conversions) while Danny Barrett added another five, punishing the Scottish for their gaps in defense and showcasing the Eagles’ relentless ability to attack.

At the start, Scotland was all too ready for the around-the-outside Baker route, but that lasted only moments as the racehorse quickly stole his opportunity mid-Scottish pass and ran down the field for the first points. The next two possessions would see Martin Iosefo get the ball to Stephen Tomasin and Danny Barrett to score twice, while a high kick from Folau Niua gave Baker plenty of time to charge into open space and drive it in for a 26-0 shutout before the half.

Scotland took the ball and back-to-back penalties when play resumed, dancing in U.S. territory but making no real moves towards the line. Though offense was lacking, their defense held strong again – guarding the outside – as Carlin Isles tried to take full advantage of any open space.

Finally, desperation for momentum reached a high gear as Scotland’s Joseva Nayacavou saw a sheer opening and put the ball in Scott Ridell’s hands to end the shutout, 26-7. Robbie Fergusson would snag the ball moments later and dot down for the Scottish once more, but it wasn’t enough. A Danny Barrett charge, a late penalty on Scotland and a final whistle called it for the 26-12 United States victory.

In two Sydney Sevens matches thus far, the Eagles have proved their ability to be a dynamic threat. Head Coach Mike Friday and his squad will be ready for rival Canada who comes in hungry for a win after losses to Scotland (5-52) and Australia (5-27).

It all continues at 4:26 AM ET (Sat, Jan. 27), LIVE on ESPN3.
