Sydney Sevens - Bronze Final

Men's Sevens Concede Bronze to Argentina

SYDNEY, AUS. - The Men's Eagles Sevens saw their run in Sydney come to an end as trouble controlling Argentina's offense resulted in a 10-31 loss in the Bronze Final. The squad made massive improvements throughout the tournament -- advancing farther than they have all season -- all the way to a 4th place finish at Sydney Sevens.

"We did not play anywhere near our potential in that game; and as a result, we were soundly beaten," said Head Coach Mike Friday, describing his disappointment in the loss.

"Once again we made too many mistakes both with ball in hand and tackle completion allowing Argentina to impose their physical game at the breakdown."

Argentina was on the board early with a score in the first two minutes by Sabato. Velez followed suit right after, and the Argentinians had built themselves a comfortable 0-12 lead. It wouldn't be until several minutes later when the Eagles would notch one in themselves, allowing Martin Iosefo to drive it in just before the half, 5-12.

When play resumed, struggles controlling Argentina continued. The soon-to-be Bronze Winners scored another two consecutive tries before launching their third of the half to extend the lead, 5-31.

A few extra minutes at the end allowed new Eagle Captain Ben Pinkelman to put one over the line right as the final whistle blew. Though it wasn't enough to earn the win, the United States proved that they will fight until the very end.

The Eagles finish fourth in Sydney with World Rugby Player of the Year Perry Baker still hunting for one more try to tie Zack Test as USA's All-Time Leading Scorer. As the squad looks to Hamilton Sevens next week, they'll be prepared to build on their progress, break records and adjust with the competition as a team.

"We have moved forward in terms of making the top 4 this weekend but we are very disappointed with our performances in the last 2 games," says Coach Friday. "If we want to move on as a group, we have to demand more of one another and hit the high standards we are capable of in these big games."
