Draw with Kenya Forces USA to Challenge QFs

WAIKATO, NZ. - It was another comeback for the Men's Eagles Sevens, but this one fell just short. The 19-point run was only enough to draw with Kenya, who -- despite being held from scoring in the second half -- advances to the Cup Semi Finals with their two wins on the day. The Eagles needed nothing short of a win to earn a spot in the race for the Cup and instead are forced to the Challenge Quarter Finals where they'll face Spain at 5:44 PM ET on Sat, Feb. 3.

"Absolutely disappointed with today and how the results have panned out for us," said Head Coach Mike Friday. "We claw ourselves back into each and every game but for one reason or another, at critical moments, we don't appear to be getting the calls we have earned or deserve."

The Eagles have spent the day fighting to overcome critical errors which forced them to make tight comebacks in every match; and, Kenya was no different. After allowing Nelson Oyoo to steal the ball within moments and score the first try, the United States conceded another two scores to Jeffery Oluoch and Willy Ambaka Ndayara  -- all on long runs with plenty of open space for the Kenyans to move.

By the time Kenya had a comfortable 19-point lead and the first half was winding down, the Eagles found their attack and moved the ball around to Perry Baker who ignited much-needed momentum with his first score, 5-19.

When play resumed in the second half, Carlin Isles took his first over the line immediately, charging across the field at full-speed to keep the rhythm moving. Then, a trip to the sin bin for Eaton Agero gave the advantage back to USA who had Carlin Isles drive another one in to tie it up, 19-19.

Messy play and many whistles halted any scoring, putting pressure on both teams in the final minutes. As the clock wound down, Kenya took what appeared to be a promising drive, until a tackle stopped them in their tracks until they recovered the ball with enough time to kick out of touch. Draw.

"We have to deal with the disappointment of not making the cup, recover and reset for tomorrow," said Head Coach Mike Friday. "We need to come out with fresh determination to get the job done and chase down the 8 points that are on offer to us."

With 8 points still on the line, the Eagles will head to the Challenge Quarter Finals to face Spain who has yet to win a match in the tournament. It all continues at 5:44 PM ET (Sat, Feb. 3), LIVE on ESPN3.
