Men's Sevens hold off Spain in Challenge Cup QF

HAMILTON, NEW ZEALAND - Every key piece of the Men's Sevens offensive arsenal was in full force to start day two as the Eagles defeated Spain, 29-12 in the Challenge Cup Quarter Finals. Perry Baker put together breakaways, Danny Barrett proved too hard to tackle and Carlin Isles evaded tackles completely on a warm afternoon in Hamilton.

The United States started off with a set piece as the Spanish kickoff was whistled to short. Captain Ben Pinkelman attempted a tap and go, but with a forced knock on by Spain, the ball ended up in a breakaway the other direction, only to again about face for Martin Iosefo to find space. United States up 5-0 early.

Spain continued to put together steady rucks until Ignacio Martin Goenaga eyed a hole between Iosefo and Folau Niua, putting 5 points in their column.

The US began to find their rhythm, and of course Perry Baker, before and just after halftime as Folau Niua did well to create turnovers and quickly move the ball out wide for Baker. As you've seen him do a million times, Baker inched just out of defensive reach and sped away toward the try zone.

Eagles lead, 19-7 minutes into the second half.

Following the ensuing kick off, Danny Barrett joined the highlight reel after collecting the kick in open space and held perfectly firm as his defender lunged at him for the tackle. Proving to be one of the hardest men to bring down in the HSBC Sevens Series, Barrett continued on to dot down.

Spain would add another 7 points after Pinkelman was caught in a two on one in the Eagles end. Despite bringing down the breakaway, Spain was able to reset with patience and feed Manuel Sainz-Trapaga for the try.

Looking to seal it before time expired, Carlin Isles came off the bench with fresh legs, collected the ball on the left flank, eluded two last tackle attempts, and closed the game for a 29-12 eagles victory.

With the offensive attack looking as seamless as it did today, the Men's Eagles Sevens prove to be a nightmare for opposing defenses.

The Men's Sevens look to move forward towards a crucial 8 points in the Challenge Cup semi, later this evening at 9:25pmET.
