Men's Sevens pick up early victory to open USA Sevens

LAS VEGAS, NV - Back on US soil, the Men Eagles Sevens are feeling right at home as they pick up an early win against Samoa to open USA Sevens in Las Vegas. Danny Barrett bulldozed his way to a pair of tries while Martin Iosefo and Captain Ben Pinkelman added one each in the 26-12 victory. Samoa holds the lion-share of wins in the head-to-head history with the US, having taken 25 of the 35 total meetings. The Eagles however, were able to take advantage of the home town crowd.

Sporting a patriotic new American flag cap, Folau Niua started the match with a kick to the right flank. With defensive focus on Perry Baker, Danny Barrett was able to open up in space on the opposite flank and drive in the first of his two tries. Wrangling his pass in with one hand a few feet from touch, Barrett crossed the line, but kept breaking tackles as he directed the dot down toward the poles. With heavy wind gusting through Sam Boyd Stadium, strait-shot conversions become more valuable.

Samoa would answer back however when Gordon Langkilde broke through the middle at the US 22-meter line.

The Americas would take control before half as Martin Iosefo showed off some fancy footwork to crawl over the line and lead into a second try from Barrett who this time found the pay dirt on the left flank.

Head Coach Mike Friday at the half, ""Stay in the moment. Be simplistic, you're working hard on the outside channels and the inside support. Look after one another in the contact area."

With the second seven minutes underway, activity from the referee Jordan Way's pocket began as Gordon Langkilde made his way to the sin bin on a high tackle. The Samoan defense was able to hold steady however, and keep the Eagles from scoring during the man advantage. Not concerned, Captain Ben Pinkelman was able to cut back on the inside and pick up another 5 points.

Tomasi Alosio managed to pick up a late try after time expired, but it wouldn't be enough as the Men's Sevens claim the win for a 1-0 start in Las Vegas. Up next, Australia. After shutting out Spain, 24-0, the Aussies will look to bring down the US home town high.
