USA Dominates Argentina in Singapore Challenge Quarterfinal

KALLANG, SGP. - After a challenging start to Singapore Sevens, Head Coach Mike Friday called for accuracy in execution. And, with their 36-12 victory over Argentina in the Challenge Trophy Semifinal,  the Men's Eagles Sevens have delivered just that. With two early tries from Martin Iosefo and a hat trick by Carlin Isles, the United States dominated their opponent and now move on to the Cup Semifinal where they'll face Scotland at 3:44 AM ET (Sun, Apr. 29), LIVE on ESPN+.

An early knock on by USA's Danny Barrett seemingly indicated that challenges in execution were again on the horizon. But, winning the ensuing Argentinian scrum, Martin Iosefo proved doubters wrong by picking up the ball and putting the U.S. on the board with ease, 0-7.

A Kevon Williams knock on and a scrum given away to the opposition afforded Argentina an opportunity to attack on the next possession. Though the United States' defense remained patient, employing tight coverage to avoid uncovering any gaps, the Argentinians found space on the outside for Maximo Provenzano to sneak away and dot down, 7-5. Taking the ball on the restart, Argentina caught the Eagles off guard one more time allowing Renzo Barbier to score again within moments, 7-12.

While Argentina had shown their strength, attempting to shift the energy back in their favor, the U.S. was completely unfazed. Entirely focused on their game plan, the squad delivered an excellent relay from Stephen Tomasin to Captain Ben Pinkelman, ending with Martin Iosefo for his second score, 12-12.

Now tied at the half, the United States knew the same drive and the right accuracy was necessary to make a stand.

As play resumed, Danny Barrett took a run on the right flank, carefully keeping his feet in touch while fending off Argentinian defenders, then handing it off to Captain Ben Pinkelman. Pinkelman, with just enough space, found a wide open breakaway but saw a defender closing in and made an offload to Kevon Williams who finished the job, 19-12.

What happened mere moments after left audiences in The National Stadium stunned. Not one, not two but three consecutive Carlin Isles tries -- two scored almost identically -- gave the Eagles a 36-12 victory and a massive boost in competitive energy.

Facing Scotland at 3:44 AM ET in the Challenge Trophy Semifinals, the Men's Sevens are in perfect position to continue their drive towards the 8 points on offer. The match will be streamed LIVE on ESPN+ with updates available by following @USARugby on Twitter.
