Men's Sevens Outplayed by New Zealand in Cup Quarterfinals

PARIS, FRA. – It was a disappointing way to begin Day Two in Paris for the Men’s Eagles Sevens. After an unbeaten pool play run, the United States was overcome by a stiff defensive front and powerful offensive showing by the All Blacks Sevens. Held to one score in a 7-33 result in the Paris Sevens Cup Quarterfinals, the U.S. will now move to the 5th Place Semifinal, where they’ll face Spain at 7:41 AM ET, LIVE on ESPN+.

The United States began the match without the compelling force of Eagle Danny Barrett. Held out as a precaution, 13th man Faitala Talapusi was activated as a reserve in his place. With preparation for Rugby World Cup Sevens 2018 top of mind, Barrett will remain out for the rest of the tournament.

With only 13 points up for grabs, the Eagles must win their next two and England must drop their next two games for Team USA to keep their overall Series position of fifth place when the final stop concludes.

To open the gates, a missed pass by Captain Madison Hughes lead to a costly first try by All Blacks Sevens’ Scott Curry, 0-7. Eagle Carlin Isles with ball in hand on the wing fell prey to New Zealand’s brute physicality holding the Men’s Sevens back from any breakaway heroics.

Initially held deep on their own side, USA’s Isles finally found enough space to torch the pitch for the Americans’ lone try of the game, 7-7. Sparse tackling and fatal turnovers allowed New Zealand’s Salesi Rayasi and Regan Ware to score two more for their side, bringing the USA deficit to 7-21 at the half.

Though U.S. tackling briefly improved, the second half saw much of the same as the first with All Blacks Sevens’ Rayasi and Ware touching down once more a piece to ink the winning score of 7-33.

New Zealand picked up a late yellow for a high tackle on USA’s Kevon Williams but the advantage wasn’t enough to decrease the gap on the scoreboard by fulltime.

The Men’s Eagles Sevens will now face Spain in the 5th Place Semifinal at 7:41 AM ET, LIVE on ESPN+
