Women's Sevens drop 2019 opener in Glendale

GLENDALE, CO - Anticipation for the Women's Eagles Sevens coming into Glendale was at an all time high as the squad met with England for match one of the HSBC USA Women's Sevens. Despite holding a small lead for the majority of the match, a try at the death from Ellie Kildunne gave England the 12-10 win over the United States. With cobwebs shaken off, the US looks ahead to a paring with China and notching their first win of the season.

A bright Colorado sun shined down on Infinity Park Saturday as the Women's Sevens ran out on the pitch. England kicked off from the west end as the US reeled in possession, initiating some strong defensive play from both sides to begin. The US would claim first points after a breakthrough up the middle from Ilona Maher. The powerful Maher showed her mixture of strength and speed after England defenders struggled to complete a tackle and catch the 22-year-old as she moved into space.

England would level with a follow up try from debutant Emma Uren and take the lead after converting.

As she's done so many times, Naya Tapper swayed momentum back in favor of the US with her first try of the season just before half. Tapper found space on the left flank with Uren tracking her, but the series rookie wasn't able to match with the US veteran giving the Americans a 10-7 lead at the half.

With the narrow lead, Head Coach Chris Brown urged his team to "remain patient" through the next half.

England came out with momentum for the second seven minutes, finding openings in the US defense. Having just subbed in, Jess Breach broke away on the right for what seemed to be a guaranteed five points until Cheta Emba raced her down to halt the try. The US would win a line out and position themselves for a drive back down field and hopefully run out the clock. Changes in possession would follow and England was able to claim the upper hand and tally a score at the death from Kildunne. Red Roses win, 12-10.

The Women's Sevens head to the break 0-1 with China on deck. China will look to also get back on track having lost to New Zealand, 45-0. Tune in at 1:58pmMT on FloRugby.
