Women’s Sevens Stun in Day Two Against Australia; Advance to Semifinals

GLENDALE, CO. - The U.S. opened day two of the HSBC USA Women's Sevens tournament with a thrilling game in the Cup Quarterfinals against Australia. This was the first time in World Series history the Women's Sevens have defeated Australia since 2015 in Langford. The Americans now advance to the Cup Semifinals against France.

The U.S. last played Australia at the Rugby World Cup Sevens in San Francisco narrowly losing the bronze medal match, 24-14. Looking to turn the tables, the Women's Sevens ran out with refreshed energy.

Australia won possession off the kickoff for the final quarterfinal match at Infinity Park but a turnover gave the Americans the ball and the chance they needed. IIona Maher came charging through to score back to back tries. A beautiful conversion from Alev Kelter off the first gave the U.S. some cushion going into the half leading 12-0

Back on the pitch, Cheta Emba gained momentum to race downfield for the American's third try. Australia was able to put points on the board but the physicality from the Americans was visibly turned up a notch from day one. Kelter laid out a few of her signature hits, keeping Australia on their heels. Day two was like night and day for the Eagles with revitalized energy on home soil. Maher, the star of the game and tournament, tallied one more try in the final minutes to complete her first career hat trick. At the whistle, the U.S. claimed victory, 26-5.

Today was extremely reflective of the 2018 opening tournament in Dubai where the U.S. mirrored this years record going 1-2 in pool play to creep into the Cup bracket. Similarly, they started day two in Dubai with a massive win over top seed, New Zealand on their way to a silver medal. The Women's Sevens will look to carry that story one win further in Colorado.
