USA Women's Sevens stun China for first win of HSBC France Sevens

BIARRITZ, FRA. - In their opening match of France Sevens, the USA Women's Sevens confirmed qualification to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and soared to a 36-5 victory over China.

After winning their fourth medal of the season last month in Langford, B.C., the USA women needed only to take the field today in their first match, to earn the single World Series point needed to confirm a Top 4 finish.

As China struggled defensively throughout the game, the United States continued to employ a dominant attacking front, running through gaps and monopolizing possession to score six tries by five different players. The Chinese did manage to steal the first points of the game, however, taking advantage of a penalty on the kickoff where the ball didn't move quite far enough.

On the restart, the USA's Naya Tapper opened the gates to scoring spree with a swift run along the wing that saw her dot down to even the score, 5-5. Kris Thomas added two consecutive tries moments later, and the United States were up 17-5.

Just before halftime, Cheta Emba made a run of her own, getting tackled at five meters where Ilona Maher jumped in at support to snag the offload and give the Eagles Sevens a 22-5 lead at halftime. When play resumed, Lauren Doyle and Stephanie Rovetti combined to make it 36-5 and the U.S. side were away with their first victory of the tournament.

As the final round of the World Rugby Sevens Series 2019 continues with a second battle against Fiji at 10:42 AM ET on facebook.com/worldrugby7s, the Americans continue the hunt towards a Cup Quarterfinal berth.
