USA Men's Sevens claim striking win over Spain in Cup Quarterfinals

SYDNEY, AUS. - Four straight wins. After a full sweep in pool play, the Men's Eagles Sevens were too fast and too clever for Spain to handle, notching try after try for a striking 38-10 victory in the HSBC Sydney Sevens Cup Quarterfinals.

The Spanish had only two real opportunities to claim points, both on the opening and the closing plays of the match. Overall, it was the Eagles Sevens who dominated possession of the ball and exploited every gap left open for them in route to another smashing win.

Following Spain's opening try, USA's Danny Barrett used his powerful speed on the edge to break two tackles and swiftly offload to Captain Madison Hughes, 7-5. Hughes was quick to outrun Spanish defenders and dotted down between the posts with ease.

Next up was Stephen Tomasin who took a long pass across the width of the pitch from Folau Niua to touch down in the corner, 14-5. Unstoppable on his feet, a powerful run by Martin Iosefo followed suit and Captain Madison Hughes finished the job with his impeccable timing, 21-5.

Following halftime, Spain was called on a high tackle and gave the USA a tap and go where Stephen Tomasin dummied his way past the 22. Tomasin passed quickly to Carlin Isles on the outside and the Eagles Sevens had climbed another seven points.

Incredible work by Folau Niua brought the ball right back to Stephen Tomasin for a breakaway score to make it 33-5.

The United States was winning an assortment of tries, leaving no room on the pitch for Spain to show weakness. Proving their ability to score from any direction, the USA pulled every ounce of momentum and drenched it in favor of their side.

With a minute to go, a Spanish attack fell pray to the sharp hands of Brett Thompson who intercepted the ball and ran pitch length to seal the 38 American points.

In the end, Spain achieved their own moment on the final play, scoring with enough space on the right flank to dot down in the corner and make it 38-10.

The Men's Eagles Sevens have another difficult task looming. A battle with the English is all that stands in their way of making their fourth straight Cup Final, but the challenge will not be easy. England have lost only to Fiji this tournament and gave the 2016 Olympic Champions a run for their money with a 14-7 result.
