A National Governing Body

In 2010 USA Rugby became an Olympic Sport member, a National Governing Body (NGB) of the United States Olympic Committee (USOC). By so doing USA Rugby is now responsible for abiding by the rules and regulations of the 1978 Ted Stevens Olympic and Amateur Sports Act.

Within the Amateur Sports Act there are several duties pertaining to sports development and coaching that an NGB is responsible for:

Ted Stevens Olympic and Amateur Sports Act

(a) §220524 General duties of national governing bodies

For the sport that it governs, a national governing body shall—

  1. Develop interest and participation throughout the United States and be responsible to the persons and amateur sports organizations it represents;
  2. Provide and coordinate technical information on physical training, equipment design, coaching, and performance analysis; and
  3. Encourage and support research, development, and dissemination of information in the areas of sports medicine and sports safety.

In keeping with these requirements, USA Rugby has developed a structured comprehensive long-term sport development and coaches education program.
