Al McFarland won two USA Rugby Club Division I National Championships with New York Athletic Club in 2012 and 2015.
In July 2015, he was selected by then Head Coach Mike Tolkin and his staff to represent the United States at the top-level in the team's lead up to the 2015 Rugby World Cup. McFarland made his Men's Eagles debut in a Pacific Nations Cup win against Japan at No. 8. He then appeared in every remaining match of 2015, including all four 2015 Rugby World Cup matches, starting in six of nine. McFarland rejoined the team for their 2016 Fall Internationals, starting against the Maori All Blacks (uncapped friendly) and Romania, he came off the bench as substitute one week later against Tonga.
